The engine light came on. Took vehicle to Dodge for repair. Their diagnosis: Performed tests on purge valve and checked inside lines and found white substance all through line. Removed charcoal cannister and found it plugged with white substance. Removed and replaced purge valve and cannister and cleaned out lines.

They didn't mention what the white substance might be. Do you have an idea, and can I eliminate this issue in the future or is it a common issue? Would a change from years of gas with ethanol to ethanol free gas cause a problem?

The fuel change wouldn't cause it. To me it sounds like you were getting moisture mixing with oil or gas that caused the substance. I don't know if you fill your tank each time you get gas, but if you do, don't overfill it. That can cause fuel to get to the charcoal canister. When the pump stopps, it's full.
