Transfer case service

What kind of fluid is used for my transfer case?Can I buy it off the shelf?Also if the truck is stuck in 4 wheel drive could it be the vacuum switch? Thanks Mike

The transfer case takes Automatic Transmission fluid Type 7176. That is Chrysler's specific type. As far as the 4wd, make sure the linkage didn't come loose. There is a lever that attaches with a set screw and it can come loose. If you get a different brand of ATF, other than Mopar, make sure it works with Type 7176. Let me know if you have other questions. By the way, my books says it holds 1.3 qts. Glad to help. Let us know if you have questions in the future. I've owned Dakotas since 1990. I've had a 90, 92, 93, 98, 2000, and now an 07. I still have the 93. It has 212K on it, 6cyl 5 speed and still runs great. I use it to haul and plow snow. It just won't die.
