I have a 1996 Dodge Dakota 4 cyl. 5 speed. Replaced Cat converter. Replaced spark plugs. When I replaced spark plugs no carbon build up. Plugs were light grey. No engine codes, and the truck runs very good. Good acceleration for a 4 cyl, and very smooth at hwy speeds. But, I only get 16 mpg. Any ideas/

I 'm not sure but if you have a clean running engine, it's compression is not like new and the 16mpg is not bad. You might try scanning the 02 system with a scanner, maybe it is running a little rich, but not enough to trip a code. Make sure the tires are aired up ok. Although it seems poor, there is a lot of miles on it, Check the timing also. Ok 106,000 is like 212,000 on a 8 cylinder. I think its just older.
