I have a dodge dakota 4x4 1996 v6 manual that has quit running, we have changed fuses, and sparkplugs as well as noticed a smell of gas in the oil. What else could it be?

Spark plugs will cause a misfire. They won't stop the engine from running. First you have to check to see if you have spark AND fuel pressure. If either one is missing, troubleshoot that system. It's more common for both to be missing. Then troubleshoot the trigger circuit with the crankshaft position sensor and the camshaft position sensor.

A good place to start is by measuring the voltage on the dark green / orange wire at the ignition coil, any injector, or either small terminal on the back of the alternator. You should see battery voltage for just one second after a helper turns on the ignition switch. What's important is it must come back during cranking.
