These early dakotas have a flasher on the dash for manually accessing trouble codes. Youll need a pen and paper, your key, and either chilton, haynes repair manual or some other code source. Turn your key to the prestart position (all your electronics are on) then off. Alternate this on off position till you remain in the on position for the third time. Your check engine light will flash a number of times then pause and flash some number of times. Write down the number of each set of flashes before the pause, then take those numbers to a manual or internet source for trouble codes.
