When engine is first turned on, has high piercing screech in front, turn off engine and restart and it goes away. Doesn't always screech, but happening more often.
When stopped at stop signs/signals etc., Having problems shifting into 1st or 2nd gear

First check the fluid level in trans. With engine running in Park. Add if needed.

The screeching sounds more like a belt, check your belts for wear.

Shifting on older cars is normally controlled by vacuum or a TV cable that connects to the the throttle body then to the trans.
Check for any vacuum line leaks or the TV cable for kinks, loosness etc.
If you cannot find anything wrong with the shift issue, get a free diagnostic at a transmission shop (shop around and get 2-3 estimates).
