I have a 96 dodge 3.3L that sounds like it is getting ready to throw a rod. Can I have it rebuilt or do I need to replace the motor?

Rebuilt gets you many new parts and gaskets and you'll have a like-new engine. If you plan on keeping the van, a like-new engine is a plus. If you are concerned with spending more than you could sell the van for, go with used.

Used engine will probably be less expensive but you won't know for sure what you have. I put a used 245,000 mlle engine in my '88 Grand Caravan many years ago. Has 378,000 miles now. I add a little oil now and then, never change it, and replace the filter every other year. This is abuse, not neglect. I pull an enclosed trailer twice a year that's bigger than the van. Although not a bad engine, your 3.3L is more reliable than my 3.0L. Point is, I wouldn't be too worried about using a used engine.

Either way, labor for removal and installation will be the same. You might consider having it checked by a professional. Bad rod bearings don't take long to fail. If you're hearing a noise for a long time, it could be something much less serious. A cracked flex plate comes to mind. They can make a horrendous banging noise.
