I have a 1996 Dodge Caravan with about 140,000 mi. The " check engine" light came on, and ever since this happened the engine is constantly backfiring. At both low sppeeds and high speeds. I don't know what it could be, but I really can't afford a professional mechanic at this time. Please help me as to where I should look to solve this problem.

Without tools and some knowledge it is going to be hard to figure out whats wrong. If you have access to a code scanner run the scanner and see why the check engine light is on. Some auto parts store will do this for you for FREE. If not you could be wasting time and money trying to figure out what is wrong for it could be a dozen different things. If I had to bet though I would say the check engine light is on because your engine is misfiring. The bigger question is what is causing the misfire. Here are a few things to consider. The plugs, wires, ignition coil cap rotor lean mixture, clogged injector(s)/dirty, low fuel pressure, bad valves. ETC,ETC Are you getting the picture. Sorry to say but you need some direction on which way to go and without properly diagnosing the problem you could be changing parts that are good. Here are a few things to consider.
1) when was the last tune up (plugs cap wires rotor) just something to think about.
2) Have the car scanned for codes. this can narrow it down alot. Possibly to the one bad cylinder. You can take it from there. Hope this helps Backyardmechanic
