Tapping or clapping sound upon acceleration. Possibly broken spring? When spark plug removed from third cylinder, tapping stops. Plug still sparking. Although do not keep oil changed in regular basis; I did change oil less than 1,000 ago. Engine is very dirty. How can I go about cleaning it and removing carbon buildup? Thanks for any advise and or help with diagnosis as I can not afford repair shop prices.

The trouble is most likely in that cylinder and only way to find out is to take valve cover off. If a broken spring a on vehicle compressor is rent-able at auto parts. However you need air pressure to keep valves in place and piston down. If that is what it is it will continue to damage piston until failure. If not a broken spring then head and pan will need to come off to check to see if a broken piston and or a bad rod bearing. If the piston shows hitting all across top pretty much you have a possible spun bearing on rod which will require rod resized and crank kit which is another crank and bearings. If yo have one of those handy little cams from harbor freight you can look in cylinder to speed up process.

That was an awesome and, unfortunately not exactly what I wanted to hear. I am a girl and although pretty mechanically book smart, do not really understand the workings of internal workings parts. Had come to possible diagnosis of valve sitting and renting a compression tester. So if have compression failure in that cylinder; you go with diagnosis of the spring? This noise started coming up let pretty steep hill on highway around sixty five mph.
Also, if it gets down to head removal and piston replacement or rods; would you even recommend it on a vehicle of this age and mileage? Wish you were my mechanic. Thank you for your advise. Tells me I am looking in the right area. Also, I have a lot of oil on engine and under body noises that I notice when rolling along slowly or upon putting clutch in gear. Thanks HMAC300

Actually it gets down to how much you can get for it and with the stuff you added on I would say you probably need an overhaul and it is worth it to do it. If it were just the valve spring then yes, but if not get another car.
