I bought the truck with transmission having been overheated to the point that when put int gear there was no movement at all forward or backward. Pulling it showed wires melted to casing. There was very little oil on the transmission and the torch converter was bone dry. There didn’t appear to be any composites or debris in the fluid. I have a different transmission but need to know if the torch converter can be still good and put in? Blowing all the transmission fluid out like that, does that mean it’s ruined, or did it just shut down? Can putting fluid in it then draining it show the damage in the fluid, say by seeing nothing in it can it still be good.

Hi,

That is a really difficult one to answer. You could try filling it and then draining it to see if there is any debris in it.

If I had the vehicle, I would replace it just to eliminate the possibility of having to remove the transmission again.

Let me know if you have other questions or if I can help in any way.

Take care.

Well now I’m considering using a 4l80e transmission. Can you tell me what I’d need to get in order for it to work, I see there is an 18” 4l60e to 4l80e adapter plug, rear speed sensor and a different cross member. Is there more than these mentioned?

Hi,

Anytime you change things like this, it isn't just a transmission change. It will require mount changes and the things you mentioned. Additionally, keep in mind these are controlled electronically which means there will be a need to change the control module, wiring harness, and other controls related.

Additionally, there will be programming involved. and does the transmission you are getting have the right tail housing to fit your transfer case?

I guess what I'm saying is this. I would try to find a direct fit. It would make things much more doable, but that one is your call.

Take care,

Joe
