Wife's car, she got gas and it started and shut off immediately went and looked at it, we had it towed, a friend who owns a car lot, took pressure reading only had 35 lbs, put in a new pump, filter, same thing, after online research, put new regulator in, same thing, cranked a few time and then it started, drove home. Next morning, same thing, more research, put new crank sensor in, another ion sensor. Every thing works as it should, but same thing. My pressure is about 40, pinched return and it goes to 60+,
Put a noid light on injector, steady flash, pulled a coil and tested for spark, steady spark.

It started once yesterday and ran, after two minutes it shut off and same thing, cranks, starts and immediately shuts off.I have a scanner hooked up and everything that it will give is okay and operating.

That was the first thing I looked at, it was normal. I got it running, it was the spark plugs, carboned up from having low fuel pressure. It was a cascade failure, fuel pump weak, pressure regulator gone bad, and a crank sensor that was giving bad readings. I had replaced all of these parts, did not think to look at the plugs because they were not that old, I went back and decided to start over doing basic checks, and found the plugs bad. Thanks for asking.

I saw one other post regarding this. The car shuts off when driving - it will restart pretty quickly, then runs as if there is no problem.

Would check four things. The crank position sensor, the fuel pressure and spark. And the mass airflow sensor.

Hi junky rodeo,

Did the check engine light comes on before?

Get a scan done to find if there are any stored codes in ECM.

Does it shut off like you turned the key off? Or is it more like it struggles and stops?
Will it do it regardless of which gear you select reverse or drive?
Did it start suddenly or have you had other issues before it began (like lights flickering, getting brighter, or transmission making noises or slipping)?

We changed the fuel sending unit in the gas tank. This fixed the Engine Service Light and fuel gage problem. Then we got a new problem. The car stops running. Sometimes at idle and other timeS while driving. After a few seconds it starts back and goes again. We have three codes. P-0601 (cant remember the other ones), but have to do with the throttle body. Can you help? If I have to change the computer can I replace it with a used one and avoid going to the Dealer to flash it? I can't afford to change parts that dosn't fix it. The VIN # is 4S2CK58W0Y4339850

It would be good to have ALL the codes, but 600 series codes are computer problem codes, P0601 is a memory check sum error. A new PCM needs to be flashed, it can be done on or off the truck.

I would like your idea of what may be wrong with the Rodeo? Can I use a used PCM and is there a way to be sure that's what I need?

If your PCM is bad get an OBDII scan tool, these work on all cars sold in the USA since 96' scan the codes and post all found, Flashing requires more expensive scantools, about 1200.00 to 5000.00 and more! A junkyard PCM can work, but it needs to be from same make and model, auto trans 6 cylinder and so forth.

Recently my 2000 Rodeo has been having a hard time starting. I would get all electrical indications but the truck would not start. Sometimes after I try to start it a clicking noise can be heard coming from a control box on the passenger side of the engine when there is no key in the ignition. Also the truck has died several times while driving. All electrical indications start flickering and then it dies while driving. Sometimes I can restart it right away and sometimes I have to wait a few minutes.

Man I had the same problem with mine. It was shorting out while driving. I put it on the diagnostic and it said battery. Replaced it and it was fine until the battery drained out. It ended up being a bad ground wire.
