The steering on our minivan has recently gotten extermely hard especially in small places like parking lots or backing out of driveways. It has gotten so hard I can barely turn the wheel. There may possible be a leak since we have had to fill the power steering fluid once. What should we begin checking for to find the problem and how hard is it to replace leaking hoses?

If you suspect a leak, find the cause first. Look for puddles on the ground. The hoses have brass nuts on the ends. You must start them by hand to insure they aren't cross-threaded. Cross-threading and tightening them with a wrench will destroy the rack and pinion housing. You'll end up replacing the rack and pinion, and the old one will not be accepted as a core which will cost a lot more money.
