Car just started making a whistling noise when going above 40 mph. Seems really loud with the window down. Seems to be coming from outside. I also recently got new tires. It seems to chose when it wants to whisle, often but not all the time.

I was told by a friend today that it may be a transmission problem. Didn't think it was the brakes.

I question that is related to the trans. Have you had the brakes checked? There is a sensor that is designed to make a noise when the pads are due to be replcaed. Also, check the backing plate behind the rotor to make sure it isn't rusted or bent and touching the rotor when it turns.
