Battery is run down or the cable connections are loose or dirty. Try charging the battery for half an hour on the lowest setting. Charging an older battery at a real fast rate will shorten the battery's life due to vibrating the plates which accelerates the rate at which the lead flakes off.
Once the engine is running, check the charging system with a digital voltmeter. Measure the voltage between the two battery terminals. It must be between 13.75 and 14.75 volts. If it stays around 12.0 volts, the charging system is not working. If it is within the acceptable range, either something was left on that ran the battery down, or it might just be time for a new battery. If you find the voltage is well above 15.0 volts, the system is overcharging the battery. Water will boil out ruining the battery.
