We had a problem yesterday with removing the key from the steering column. Now the key goes in fine but will not turn. How can I move the transmission into neutral without the key. I think the problem is the saftey lock on the shifter.

I played with that for an hour with no luck. Someone else suggested rocking the car to set the shifter lock and my son is on his way to try that. Any other suggestions? Is there a transmission release to put the car in neutral without the key? Fyi This is a 2000 LXI ragtop.

I dont belive so the only way I know that you could in my experience is to remove the selector rod from the tranny and put it in neutral that way.

Rocking the car worked. Now I will have to have the saftey switches inspected. Thanks for the prompt reply and your help.
