GV 1997 Van, 4 cyl, c. 140K miles. Recent purchase, replaced starter.

With A/C on, heat gauge goes to high in about 5 minutes. A/C flucuates between cooling/not cooling.

Turn off A/C, heat gauge goes to middle in about 1 minute.

No other overheating symptoms. Standing or driving. Can repeat at will. Has been in shop for two weeks for this problem.

I would put a check on the system for pressure loss. I am talking about the cooling system, not the A/C. Air in can cause problems and let only a small amount of coolant out. Radiator. The air in the system and the loss of ability to pressurize can greatly mess with the way the system behaves for cooling at a consistant level.

Took it to another mechanic who first replaced thermosat then measured input and output portal temps. Temps were nearly the same. Radiator was clogged. Replaced and all is OK. Thanks. :D
