1999 Chrysler Concorde 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 145k miles
I have been stuck on the road 3 times in the past year with
this car. The complaint is echoed on blogs and in the car
forums but every one of these writings points to a dozen
possible causes and say "only a chrysler shop can access
the pcm/tcm info". I believe that with a ten year old it
may not be worth the time to figure this thing out. The car
will go on without fault if the a/c is off but on a warm
day with the a/c on it will sputter and die after an hour
or two, highway or country road, fast or slow. I looked
at some things and when I saw the converters mounted in the
engine compartment all I could utter is "what were they
thinking at Chrysler?" (Or smoking). I worked on cars and
trucks back in the '80s and recall the blacktop melting
from the convertor heat. I believe that might have
distracted me from checking other stuff because I figured
the compartment was getting hot, and evidenced in the
bubble on the side of my coolant resvr. The temp gauge
never goes high at the console when this event happens and
the mntc light only comes on briefly before it dies. After
a cooldown period about 45-60 mins it will start rough but
100 yards down the road seems to run just fine. My suspect
list includes 1) transmission overheating with response
from pcm to shut down, 2) fuel line getting hot and vapor
locked, 3) pcm/tcm getting hot and losing function, 4)
another unrelated sensor giving faulty report to pcm/tcm.
This story has been written by other folks on at least
seven forums I investigated and is also on the
nhtsa. Dot. Gov complaints listing. I don't believe there is
any gremlins in my Chrysler. What say you? Do you believe
in gremlins? Do you have some experience with success on
this problem?
