Why does this transmission default to second gear at any time and how is it repaired? Two Dealership shops have not found the answer yet.

Depending on what code you have on the check engine light. Usually replacing one of these units fixes the "limp home mode". Replace these parts in order.

1. Transmission service.
2. Input and output speed sensors.
3. Transmission control module.
4. Transmission solenoid pack.

But do not replace any parts prior to check the check engine light.
