car burns oil very badly. My son took the spark plugs out one time to check and they were covered in oil. For a temporary fix for a while due to the expense of buying another vehicle, my mechanic said he can replace spark plugs and I can just keep adding oil periodically. Said it won't last forever but it's sure better than rebuilding the trans. Is he correct? Otherwise the car runs pretty well. Sometimes from exhaust is ALOT of white smoke but usually not so bad once it gets going. Car trips longer than town driving the smoke from exhaust is horrible, embarrassing. Please advise the best you know of what I told you. Because of my financial condition I would like to use the car as long as possible. Thanks alot.

Some confusion here. Smoke out the tail pipe is from the engine, so what does rebuilding the transmission have to do with it? White smoke indicates a leaking head gasket / coolant, not oil. It can be worse after the engine has been off for a while, giving the antifreeze time to collect in the cylinders. Oil collecting on the outside of the spark plugs is a common, inexpensive repair. That oil will not make its way into the exhaust and will not cause smoke. Replacing the spark plugs won't solve anything related to oil on the outside.

If the engine is indeed burning oil, the smoke will be blue, but there will be no oil on the spark plug electrodes. Any oil there will burn off leaving black soot. That soot CAN foul spark plugs.
