The transmission uses an input speed sensor and an output speed sensor. The Electronic Automatic Transmission Controller (EATX) watches both sensors to determine if slippage is occurring in any of the clutch packs. When slippage is detected, the computer defaults the transmission to second gear so you can drive it slowly to a repair shop.
The good news, in your case, is it will default to second gear also if a sensor problem is detected. That's a whole lot less expensive. Since the speedometer quit, the problem most likely is sensor-related. There could be a computer problem too, but let's hope it's just a sensor.
