If it doestn't start easily it could be the needle and seat leaking in the carburator. If it starts ok without blubbering, then it could be the fuel pump diaphram leaking intermittantly while the engine is running. It is hard to detect the leak because it is under the frame and evaporates quickly, but the smell lingers. Definetely find the source of the gas smell before driving.
