I have a 2006 Chevy Trailblazer Extended LS:
I filled up all the way yesterday, got in and started my truck and it started fine but the gas gauge read completly empty. I got out and undid the gas cap and retightened it, started the truck again and the gauge went all the way to full and slowly came all the way back down. Today my wife drove it to work and said the gauge read that we had between 3/4 and full which would be close to accurate. What is the problem and could I fix it by replacing gas cap?

Hi:
Chances are the gas cap has nothing to do with it. To me it sounds like a bad float sending unit. The problem is it is part of the fuel pump and in the tank. As the float moves up (when full) and down (when empty) in moves a rheostat (resister) that allows different amounts of power to go to the fuel gauge. When it goes bad, it sends false signals, then sometimes correct ones to the gauge. Thus you have the fluctuation at the gauge.
