2000 Chevy Suburban Shifts hard when changing gears

My suburban's transmission shifts normal around town all day long. After driving on the highway the transmission will shift hard between gears when pulling off from a stop position. If we stop and shut the vehicle off for a sort time and then resume all is OK for a while until sppeds get above 50-60 miles per hour the problem returns.
