1987 Chevy Suburban Front Wheel Drive Automatic

I'm a female, actually everyone in my house is a female. I'm 17 years old and the main mechanic on the family car. As long as we've had our suburban its made a horrible squealing sound when making a turn, both left and right, the sharper the turn, the louder the squealing. Also, as of lately, we've been having problems with the car not wanting to start (it makes a ticking noise and won't turn over), and going dead when stopped and put in reverse. I was wondering if you guys could give me some insite as to what might be going on and some suggestions as to how to fix it. This is our only car and my number one concern is keeping ALL my girls safe. You're help is greatly appreciated. Thank you, Kimberly

First the steering issue -- check the powersteering fluid. Add if needed, and then start the engine. Remove the reservoir cap and have an assistant SLOWLY turn the wheel right to left. Look inside of the reservoir to see if there are any bubbles in the powersteering fluid. If so then you have a failed pump seal or hose.
Second the starting issue -- It sounds like a neutral safety switch problem. This switch is most likely located on the transmission and can be replaced relatively easy.
