I have an 83 chey K-10 with an 8-7/8 ring gear axel to remove the axel shaft you need to remove the differential pinion shaft. after I removed the lock bolt the shaft does not slide out any hints to this problem

try pushing the axle inward and a c-clip should fall. it holds the axle in place so it won't slide out. once the clip is removed the axle should slide out with no problems.

Yes I pulled the bolt out but the pinion shaft itself won't move even with a brass punch and 28 oz hammer driving it.

when you say pinion shaft, do you mean the slide pin that you removed the 5/16 bolt out to keep the axles from sliding inward? because that should slide right out of the spider gears. i have never seen one froze up before. let me know.

also make sure the bolt didn't break off inside the slide pin.

the only thing i can say is remove the hogs head out,( make sure that the shims that space the hogs head from the housing go back in the same spot, don't mix them up), and get it on a work bench and try getting more leverage to knock it out. if you have to, heat up the spider gears to expand the metal. it should come out.
