Can you take the cv axle out of the truck and still drive it? I was told by 6 different mechanics and one who is a mechanic that works at a chevrolet delership that you can take it out and still drive the truck. I did and didnt make it 10 feet and my whole wheel came off. Then I was told that the wheel bearings had to be put in wrong because that is the onlyu way the wheel could come off if the cv axle was removed. So pretty much is it possible to take the cv axle out and still drive the truck?

No, that is the craziest thing I've ever heard, and you say ten mechanics told you this? Oh my god, no wonder toyota has all these recalls lol. Unless they modify it somehow, because the axle and axle nut helps to keep the the wheel from coming off, and how do you keep the tranny fluid from leaking. Thats crazy. I dont know maybe someone else has heard of it and will jump in and comment

Thanks alot. That what I thought because I took it off myself at my buddies shop and because I figured I could do it myself with everything that I was told. I am no mechanic but it pretty strightforward on how to take something apart and put it back together. I took it off and took the axel out it five mins becaus eit was broken so it just slid right out. And there was just a big hole where the nut was and I said so now whats gonna hole thid wheel on and they said that just hold the axle in and I said ok. Not knowing but coming from the shop owner I figured he would know. So I put the wheel back on back it off the lift check the oil and turn out of the parking lot and and the wheel comes off. Then they tell me that whoever put the wheel bearings in had to put them in wrong and thats why it came apart. Once again not being a mechannic I said ok not knowing any different and left the truck there. Then I talked to more people and they proceeded to tell me the same thing as I said in my first post and that a 2 wheel drive truck is the same exact parts without a cv axle. So idk but its getting fixed tomorrow for Free because of the stupid mistake. It was a 70 dollar fix and now it turned into needing wheel bearings caliper bracket and the cv axle. But o well thanks for the help.
