2003 Chevy Silverado directional signals

When I put the left directional signal the 4 way flashers also engage. This doesn, t happen all the timeand if I move the handle a few times it goes back to the left indicator. The local dealer said it could be upwards of $600 to repair. Is this a wide spread problem or an isolated one and do you know if a recall would be in order.
