ABS light is on?

I have a 97 Suburban with a 5.7 engine, 4x4,126, 00miles.
When I first start driving in the morning, I have no speedomator reading and it seems it will not shift out of first gear. The ABS light is also on. After a couple of blocks of driving, it will shift gears and I have a seep reading, The ABS light is still on.
I stop, turn off the engine, and restart. The ABS light is sometimes off and sometimes on and it seems to shift OK and I have speed readings. It works this way untill the next morning and we do it all over again. It seems to shift OK after it is good and warm. The ABS light is mostly off at this point. Sometimes when I brake, I hear the pulsating sound like the ABS is braking and I'm on dry hard road.
Is there any connection between the shifting and ABS?
Any suggestions about the shifting and speedomator?
Any idea on the ABS light sometimes on and other times off?

Could be the vehicle speed sensor-the computer uses it to determine speed and to command shifting solenoids for transmission to operate properly. This video will show you how to scan the ABS system.

Please run down this guide and report back.

Check the sensors at each wheel. Also, have the computer scanned. It may help determine where the problem is. Most parts stores will scan it for free.

I have a 1995 diesel, 6.5 diesel turbo. Abs light is on, and trans will not shift. The truck does need a brake job also. I can't find a 1995 0bd1 code meter for a diesel.

If I do a brake job. Do you this the abs will start working again or should I change the speed sensor.

I really want to get a meter. Code meter for 1995 diesel. To check codes. Please HELP

You don't need a scanner. Jump the A and B terminals on the OBD plug and you can get the codes from the check engine light.

As far as the brakes, new brakes won't eliminate a ABS light. It most likely is an issue with a sensor. As far as the trans not shifting, that is a different issue. Is the speedo working?

I don't know how to check this. Or were it is located. The speed sensor.

Can you recommend a code meter for a 1995 Chevy diesel obd1.

Thank you again.

OTC code meters, can't find a web site for the co. They say, they might have one that does OBD 1 and for a 1995 diesel. If you can recommend a code meter please do.

I called the co. They say the 3822 will read codes. For a 1995 diesel.6.5 turbo.

I think I will first change the seed censor and see if corrects the problem.

The OTC 3822 cost 799.00 From Milex.

Let you know how I make out.

John:

That is a lot of money. I wouldn't spend it if you don't plan to keep the vehicle for a long time. You could pay someone to do it many times for you for a lot less.

So my truck can still stop but my ABS light is on and when I press my brakes they dont even do anything until it almost touchs the floor. When its off it touches the floor still but then if you pump it, it will get tighter. It does it when its on too but not as good. Any suggestions?

Ok, changed the speed sensor and been driving the truck. Everything was good till tonight. SBS light came on, and truck would not shift, turned the key on and off 4 times and abs light went off and truck shifted.

I do have found it, while changing VSS, a small antifreeze leak on a line going to the trans.

Truck drove good after VSS for one day. Please advise again.

Thank you for the information. Sorry for the delay in responding.
I used a jumper as suggested and the reading I got was a 2- 5 flashing of the ABS light.
What next?
