I had the same problem. It is simple to remove the steering column follow the steering shaft down to the boot. Once you "un-button" the boot it's simply a matter of loosening the single bolt. Once removed pull back on the steering shaft (if it's difficult use a large flat head to break the seal or turn the steering wheel a little) and pull until it reciever clears the splines. With this out of the way I chose to go beside the driver tire under the rubber wheel skirt and it was finished in minutes.
