I had my transmission rebuilt less than 3 years ago, and suddenly my check engine light came on, and now the truck starts off in 3rd gear and overdrive or "D" is weaker than it used to be. When the check engine light goes off, once in a while, the truck is back to normal. That went on for a while, but now it starts off in third all the time. I have to manually shift it everyday now. I still however, don't have first gear, even when I manually shift it. I'm afraid that if I continue with this manually shifting, I will burn out my transmission. Is there something I can do myselft to troubleshoot this problem? All transmission shops want $100 just to diagnos the problem, and we all know there going to tell me that I need a new transmission. They are all the same.

Ok, I went to a friends auto repair shop and he was able to give me the check engine codes. They are:
V100 - Class 2 serial comm. Problem
P1171 - Fuel system lean during acceleration
P0562 - System voltage low
P0463 - Fuel Level sensor group signal High/open
P0756 - Shift Solenoid 'B' performance or stuck off
P0756 - 2-3 shift solenoid 'B' circuit fault

I know that some of these codes pertain to other things besides my transmission, but I was told that the last 2 are transmission codes.

Without a scan tool there is nothing that can be done short of replacing the 2-3 shift solenoid. Did you check fuse with a test light need to know if power is getting to solenoid?

Yes I tested it with a test light. I checked continuity on the fuse also. It tests out fine. Where exactly is this 2-3 solenoid located on my truck? Is this something that I can replace myself? About how much do these things go for at a auto parts store? And, if I had a transmission shop do the repair, what do they generally charge for this?

It's on the valve body so would need to drop pan. Held on by a clip so not to tough of a job. Solenoid is @$60 and 1.5 hr labor
