1994 Chevy S-10 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic LOTS miles

I am trying to change the compressor on my vehicle. There is one serpintene belt driving it. My problem is that when I loosen the 2 bolts that hold the unit in its mount and pull them forward they hit the clutch assy. Do I need to remove the clutch or I was thinking of cutting the bolts and putting them back from the back side and nutting them on the front. I have already heard arguements of all kinds. I have 160 dollars in a new compressor and I cant screw this up. By the way I am very mechanically inclined and am certified to handle the recovery of the refridgerant. I know and have refridgerant and gauges and all the toolls and I just dont now the way do remove and replace the compressor HELP!

Hello and thanks for donating

I'm not certain which type of compressor you have installed since there were many different types equipped with this vehicle. Most compressors take a special service holder tool to remove the clutch before removing the compressor itself, but if you want to cut the bolts and mount then rearward that would just be something you would have to try. I don't know if it would hold as good as the original position or not. If you tell me the compressor type, or the part number so I can look it up, I could tell you which service tool you need to do this job the correct way.

Okay that is actually a replacement, not stock, but their instructions state to removing the compressor bolts then it should come out, says nothing about having to remove clutch. I have posted this question into our Moderator section so that other techs can come and help you out a bit more.
