Engine Mechanical problem
1990 Chevy S-10 Engine Size unknown Wheel Drive Type unknown Automatic? Miles

I have a 1990 chevy s10 and for a long time it was hard to start requiring alot of gas, but now it wont even start to turn over unless jumping from a running vehicle. Someone told me that this was probably the starter, if so, how do I replace it, I have never worked on cars before but am a fairly quick learner and am also very good with tools, as well if I replace the starter and it still doesn't start where do I look next?

It can have 12v but if it doesnt have any amps then its no good. Why I think its battery problem is because it cranks with a jump start.

Ok, but if I could get it to run for a while, would the alternator charge it?, Also, while it sits in my driveway waiting to be fixed I can turn the headlights on and they seem to be at full bright, would this mean that it's charged? Otherwise i'm not sure how to check DC amps, and I dont have a battery charger yet

Get it running and check alt output, should be 14v, im trying to be as helpful as I can and not lead you in the wrong direction, unless you diagnose it properly im afraid we are going to misdiagnose it. For one jump nstarting a dead battery and letting the alt charge it will put tremendous strain on alternator and can damage it.
