I have a leak coming from the passenger side of my 96 cavalier. Its right under where the collant tank is but it is a orange-red color. The coolant light is on even though the tank is full. Is it a bad thermostat or something else like the transmission?

For that year car, the color of the coolant sounds right. Need to look closely or drop it off at a garage for pressure testing.

But the coolant color that I have in there is greenish, should I drain it and put a different type in?

Originally the car came with dex-cool which is a 5-yr/150,000 mile coolant. The green is a 2yr/24,000 mile coolant. Mixing them will reduce it's value down to the least common denominator which is the green. I would stay with the green at this point.

I'm not sure what else would have an orange color to it. ? Trans fluid is red.

If the only other symptom is a the low coolant light is on, it is highly likley the sensor for low coolant located in the reservior is bad.

Should find out what that leak is regardless.
