temperture qauge rises quickly when switching from cold air to hot then returns just as quick when switched back to cold air.

Hi:
It sounds like you have a short in the system. Has the car ever overheated when the gauge shows hot? Because of the amount of work and knowledge this repair may take, I recommend taking it to a auto electric repair shop.
