I have a 1995 monte carlo Z34 with a 3.4L. The car will go into overdrive for a while and later not go back into od. The car is driven 4 miles to town and after driving in town for a while and trans temp getting hot it will not go back into od. The trans has not been driven long enough to check if the trans will drop out of od at highway speeds. Ive changed the fluid and filter only to make shifts softer but not fix the od problem. Any ideas?

If it is getting hot that fast, there is most likely an internal issue. Have you tried using an aerosol trans cooler flush to see if something is plugging up the trans cooler? If the cooler is flowing, then it may be time for a tear down to see what is causing the trans to get hot that fast. If thecheck engine light is on, have it scanned for any codes, it may help figure out the problem

When the car is reaching operatin temp is when the problem occurs. I didn't mean to imply the trans is getting hot after reaching operating temps. I am in the middle of changing the thermostat in hopes of irregular temp is causing the trans not shift. Just throwing darts and killing maintenance issues in the process. Is there something outside the trans I can be focusing on before I get to the part of having to take it to a trans shop and run for codes? I not seen a trans act this way. Thanks ed

Then it may have something to do with the engine temp. There shouldnt be any external adjustments on that trans, unless it has a TV (throtle valve) cable, but Im pretty sure it doesnt. If the speedo and everything else is working properly, the trans shop may be the next stop. Sorry
