1995 Chevy Monte Carlo 6 cyl Automatic 248000 miles

Hello-

I have a 95 Monte Carlo. The Security light stays on most of the time and the car will not start. After 3 minutes it will start. I was told that it was my key, so I purchased a new one yesterday. I am having the same problem with the new key.

My question is, is there a way to diable this secuirty feature all together? The dealer is trying to tell me that it could be my ignition and that it would cost between $450 and $650 to fix.

HELP!

Thanks for any info you can provide.

There is a problem with the system shuting it down, and to the best of my knowledge, there is no way to disable it. Have you taken it to a dealer? There could be a problem with the sensor in the steering column. As far as I know, dealers are the only ones that have the proper test equipment to diagnose these problems. If you haven't taken it to a dealer, I would recommend doing that first before replacing things.
