Electrical problem
2002 Chevy Malibu 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

I have had trouble starting my car. The only way I could get the engine to fire was to leave the key in the on position for a few seconds, then turn it to start. Always seemed to work. The repair shop replaced the fuel pump, relay and filter. This worked good for about a week then it acted again. They changed the pump a second time and a week has gone by and the problem is back. I have used and trusted this shop for over 20 years. Things do happen to us all. Any ideas?

Ok so what brand pump are they using? Have you had the fuel pressure checked at initial start? Let me know what you can.

The fuel pressure had been checked both times and they are using GM new products. It also doesn't seem to matter whether engine is hot or cold when problem occurs.

There are no codes.
There is spark.
The key has been cycled.
If you spray chemtool into throttle plates engine will start, but then dies. If key is left in the on position for a few seconds before crank, then turn the key to start, engine will start and run. Hot or cold, doesn't matter.

OK that helps the more info you provide the better I can help. Anyway do you have a digital multi meter? Have you checked the fuel pump relay to see if it clicks when you first turn the key on or does it wait too? It is located in or on the fuse box that is under the hood. Also under the left (dirver) front seat is the ground for the fuel pump just make sure it has a good clean connection. Let me know what you find here.
