First, have the computer scanned to identify a trouble code. It will tell you where a problem is coming from. Also, most parts stores will do it for free.

Next, check for vacuum leaks and make sure the idle air control solenoid is working properly. Either one could cause an idle problem.

Hi:
Chances are there is a problem with the throttle position sensor (TPS) or the idle air control valve (IAC). However, I can't be sure unless you have the computer scanned for trouble codes. Take the car to a nationally recognized parts store and they should scan it for free. Let me know what codes they find.

The idle speed is controlled by metering air into the intake so if the engine is getting any unmetered air from a leak anywhere, that will do it. It can also be a faulty IAC (idle air control).

It's on the side of the throttle body.

2001 Chevy Lumina 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 140000 miles

Hi, We are having high idle on our Lumina. It rarely happened in the winter but now is happening almost every time the car is started since the weather is warmer. It will rev up to 2000 rpms and will stay there until the car is shut off and restarted a few times. It has also stalled a couple times. Is there anything we can try to fix ourselves before we take it in for service? Could you please explain in detail? Thank you for any help it is very very appreciated!

Engine Performance problem
1996 Chevy Lumina 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 165000 miles

The engine revs up and down when it is warmed up. It runs fine when cold. As it revs up and down I can give it a little gas and it smooths out for a few seconds then acts up again. I have check the vacuum lines and have replaced the mass air sensor with other old one. Could it be that I have another bad sensor or what. Thank You

HAs the check engine light come on? To me it sounds like a throttle position sensor (TPS). Let me know about the check engine light.

For the past year my chevy lumina occasionaly kicks into the high idle mode and will not stop. The car will race anywhere from 5 minutes to twenty minutes while driving. It does not matter if the car is in motion or at a stop light.I have sprayed gumout and power washed the carberator. The throttle moves freely.

Did you also remove and clean the idle air control valve on top of the throttle body? If it persists, you might replace the IAC.

I had a similar problem with a 1996 Lumina. It turned out to be the coolant temperature sensor. There was corrosion on the connector terminals. I cleaned them, put silicone grease on them to seal out water and the problem was solved. Apparently the corrosion changed the resistance of the sensor making the ECM think the engine was cold and needed high idle to warm-up the engine.
