My 2000 Chevy Lumina "clunks" into reverse when I start it up and put it in reverse. It only seems to do it the first time I go to reverse, when it is cold. After it sits for a while and cools back down, it does it again. There is no noise once I get going, just the one time. Wondering what it could be. Thanks.

It could be a few things. Check the trans mounts and the cv joints for excessive play.

Let me know what you find.

It does appear that the engine moves quite a bit when it is put into reverse the first thing in the morning. Doesn't seem to do it once it is warmed up a bit. The first time, though, it looks like the engine moves back quite some distance. Thanks.

If it is moving more than an inch, it sounds like you have a bad or worn motor mount.
