Engine Cooling problem
1997 Chevy Lumina Automatic 150000 miles

Last three weeks, intermittently, hot engine light / heat gage going up temporarily, but no heat or steam in engine. Loses acceleration, check engine light coming on. Catalytic converter? In CA I can't get a free diagnostic.

A converter will cause the car to both loose power and overheat. You need to listen for a ratteling, hissing, or note if there seems to be limited back pressure from the exhaust. You can also check for pressure at an upstream O2 outlet and check it with the downstream.

Don't the nationally recognized parts stores like Auto Zone, Advance. Scan for free?

Thank you for your response. Had a friend run a diagnostic today and code said either map sensor or pedal sensor. And no, most auto parts stores no longer do the diagnostics, at least here in CA. I think we're going to try throttle sensor first and then map :), and also flush coolant. Thanks again ! !

I'm sorry to hear that about the free scanning in Ca. They advertise it here in PA. Let me know what you find. I would like to know.
