1996 Chevy Lumina noise when we accelerate

Our car just started making a whining noise when it accelerates. What could that be?

Hard to say. I've had a lot of whining from alternator bearings, sometimes even when new, that still work fine. Probably, it's something operated by the belt or maybe the belt itself. Check the belt condition, then start it up and listen closely (but keeping a safe distance from the turning belt) to see if you can pinpoint it.
