If the check engine light has been on, there is a trouble code stored in the computer. Most nationally recognized parts stores will scan it for free. THat way you will know where the problem is coming from. Chances are it is a throttle position sensor or an idle air control valve is bad. These are guesses without knowing the code.
Have the computer scanned and let me know what you find.
