When you turn the key it goes to the on position, but it will not go far enough to start it. Can you tell me what might be wrong

It could be one of three things. It could be the tumbler (where the key goes), the rod that runs from the tumbler to the ignition switch, or the ignition switch. The steering column will need taken apart to check all items.
