My impala ignition won't turn and the car doesn't start even though we put a battery in. Can somebody tell me what's going on?

If the ignition does not turn, it is possible that the sidebar inside is bad. Did you try spraying something like LiquidWrench in there to clear it out?

Also, if the key does turn, what happens when you try to start it? Can you hear it trying to turn over, or is there no sound at all?

Well from what my wife told me, the igniton won't even move for the car to start. What do I do next if the liquid wrench doesn't work?

Try that first because that is a cheap fix if it works. If it still will not turn, it may be a problem with the key. Keys these days have computer chips in them and if the key was bent or damaged, it may not work. If you have a spare key, try that.

If neither of those things work, you may need a new ignition cylinder. Inside the ignition is a sidebar with springs on it that moves aside and allows the cylinder to turn when the key is inserted. The springs on this can go bad and then there is nothing to do but replace the entire assembly. Hopefully cleaning the ignition out or trying another key will work for you.
