Postalstanger,
There is a Tech. Service Bulletin No. 01-02-32-001O
Subject: Steering - Clunking Noise From Front Of Vehicle On Turns
It can be purchased from ALLDATA. Com, although it's probably not nescessary.
When I had this problem with my Impala (the rev. Letter was B at that time), the mechanic just replaced the intermediate shaft.
The bulletin at that time had instructions for disassembling the shaft (looks like a splined coupling),
cleaning the lube from the cavity, then repacking with lube and reinstalling a rubber plug that ( I guess) was supposed to keep the lube in and prevent movement of the shaft along the spline.
I don't know what Rev. O consists of, but I doubt that it's more serious than replacing the shaft.
I don't know what could be causing a rattle inside the car. I have had similar misterious rattles only to find that one of the kids had left a toy in the passenger door map storage area, so I think I would check for such as that first and then enlist a passenger with an objective ear to ride along on a "make it happen" ride.
Good luck and drive carefully,
TakeChargeSarge
