2002 Chevy Impala 6 cyl 68000 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
In April of 07 at 52000 miles the catalytic convertor was replaced with a non GM part. In Feb 08 it was replaced again at 62000 miles along along with the upper and lower oxygen sensors. On May 31, 08 with 67000 miles, the check enginge light indicates a PO-420 AGAIN. The local mechanic says it is not the problem. GM won't take responsiblity because it is not an original replacement part, even though they say it is under the federal goverment warrenty. The car has had all the maintains done as sechedule and is running fine, other wise. I like the car and hope to keep it for another 2 or 3 years. What can I do? I have an inseption due at the end of August. Wiill it pass? Can I run the car with this indicated problem? Please send reply to my e-mail.

I would make it a point to take issue with whoever replaced it the first time. CLEARLY they should have told you about the 8/80,000 warranty on it. That is robbery.

A leak before the converter in the exhaust can cause this code.

Also the oxygen sensors can be monitored for activity...or lack of. If the sensor is coated with carbon it will not operate properly, the converter can become coated as well. A motorvac type of cleaning can help or eliminate this. There are other methods as well.

Some aftermarket cats do not have enough prescious metals to make them last. IF the cat is deemed bad again, replace it with an AP brand or OEM
