2001 Chevy Impala Transmission problem

My Impala has been acting weird when it shifts. It has been shifting kind of hard and the RPM's go up to around 2.5 and then it shifts and they drop down between 1 and 1.5. Then sometimes it seems as though the transmission can't get into a certain gear. When I step hard on the gas, the RPM just go up to about 2.5 and it does not shift very well.

You should first have it scanned for codes. I can tell you that only a Tech 2 scanner can read all of the transmission codes. Some codes won't show up at all on aftermarket scanners.
