Among other problems, I took my Impala in to check why the security light was going on regularly. They said likely BCM but that it was an erroneous signal and recommended I just ignore it. So I let it go; 5 days later my door and trunk locks don't work - except with the key and manually pushing the locks on the doors. I talked to the dealer where I had it fixed but they are not sure it's the same problem unless I pay for a new diagnostic. Should I just let this go? It's inconvenient but I can sure live with locks not being automatic. Am I at risk of a breakdown? Anything I can fix myself? Your thoughts? I've been laid off, and the other stuff I had fixed came to $1300. However, I also can't afford to be stranded.

Security system problems almost always will leave you stranded on this vehicle. More common is a faulty ignition cylinder but bcms are also known to fail on this vehicle but not nearly as often. To make sure you wont get stranded I would suggest getting it taken care of or get a second opinion. Hope this helps

Thank you for your response; so you think the locks are part of the security light problem? The most recent conversation with the dealer - recommended I push the "unlock" "lock" buttons simultaneously on my fob next to the car to see if the security light went off. It did, but the locks still don't work.

The bcm controls security function and door lock and unlock function so either you have 2 seperate problems or the bcm is the cause of both problems. Unfortunately you will have to have it diagnosed and have bcm codes reread to see if it is a internal bcm problem.
