I get my oil checked every three months at a local car place - they check it out each time - this time they say I need remanufactured rack and pinion asssembly and change of power st. Fluid. Is it dangerous if it goes out? How do I know if I need to do it right now? What is a reasonable price?

Are you having any trouble turning or are you hearing any strange noises when turning? As far as replacement, if neither of the items I mentioned exist, it may be starting to leak and that is what they saw. It can last that way for a long time before going bad completely. I recommend having a second opinion. If you were not having any trouble prior, chances are it will be fine.

Also, a remanufactured rack is usually around 200.00 and figure 2 or 3 hours labor.
