2000 Chevy Impala Exhaust smell inside the car

My impala has a very strong exhaust odor inside the car. Whether its moving or sitting still, the smell is still there. If we turn the A/C to cycle inside air its not as bad. But if its on fresh air, its unbearable. What could it be?

Hi: Do you hear any exhaust leaks? If you place a heavy rag over the tail pipe with the engine running, do you hear a hissing sound from anywhere in the exhaust system? NOTE: IF YOU TRY THIS, THE EXHAUST GETS HOT.
